Argentine Model 1909 Mauser Rifle (DWM)

Overview

The Argentine Model 1909 Mauser rifle represents one of the finest contract Mauser rifles produced in the early twentieth century. Manufactured in Germany by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) for the Argentine military, the Modelo 1909 is widely regarded for its high level of machining quality, durable finish, and elegant national crest markings.

Argentina adopted the rifle as part of its modernization program, continuing the country’s long relationship with Mauser-pattern arms that began with earlier Model 1891 rifles. The Modelo 1909 is chambered in 7.65×53mm Argentine and is built on the large-ring Mauser 98 action.

Receiver and Crest

The receiver ring displays the Argentine national crest, consisting of the Phrygian cap atop a pike within an oval shield, surrounded by laurel branches and a rising sun. Crest detail remains visible, though softened slightly by age and handling.

Left receiver wall markings read:

MAUSER MODELO ARGENTINO 1909
DEUTSCHE WAFFEN- UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN BERLIN

These markings confirm German manufacture by DWM for the Argentine contract.

Rear Sight

The rifle retains its original tangent rear sight graduated in meters. The sight ladder and slider remain intact and consistent with the standard Modelo 1909 pattern.

Bolt and Action

The rifle features the standard Mauser 98 controlled-round-feed bolt system with straight bolt handle and three-lug locking arrangement. Finish wear is consistent with service use.

Serial Numbers

Visible serial marking:

Matching status should be verified across the bolt, floorplate, and stock components where accessible.

Stock and Cartouches

The walnut stock shows service wear, handling marks, and arsenal finish typical of rifles that remained in military inventory. A circular stock cartouche is visible on the buttstock.

Wood-to-metal fit remains solid, and the stock retains its original military configuration.

Historical Notes

The Argentine Modelo 1909 Mauser is often considered one of the highest-quality Mauser contract rifles produced prior to the First World War. German manufacturing standards, combined with Argentina’s detailed contract requirements, resulted in rifles known for smooth bolt operation, precise machining, and durable construction.

Many rifles were later stored in Argentine arsenals for decades, contributing to the survival of well-preserved examples today.
