The Colombian FN 1950 Short Rifle represents one of the final military Mauser contract rifles produced in the classic tradition of export Mauser production. Manufactured by Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium and chambered in .30-06 Springfield, these rifles reflect the transition from early 20th-century Mauser contracts into the post-World War II military landscape of Latin America.
This example is part of my personal collection and represents my interest in Latin American Mauser contracts — an area of collecting that blends German engineering heritage with regional military history.
Contract Background
After World War II, Colombia sought to modernize its military rifle inventory. FN, which had resumed production of Mauser-pattern rifles after the war, supplied Colombia with short rifles built on the proven Model 98 action.
Unlike earlier Colombian Mausers chambered in 7×57mm, these rifles were produced in .30-06 Springfield, aligning Colombia with U.S. ammunition logistics during the Cold War period.
This shift makes the FN 1950 contract particularly interesting to collectors — it represents both continuity and modernization within Mauser contract production.
Markings and Features
This rifle retains the classic features expected from FN’s post-war Mauser production:
- Colombian national crest on the receiver
- FN manufacture markings
- Mauser 98 pattern controlled-feed action
- Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters
- Walnut stock with traditional military configuration
The quality of machining and finish reflects FN’s reputation for producing some of the finest Mauser-pattern rifles of the postwar period.

This rifle is marked:

This indicates refurbishment or arsenal work performed by Colombia’s military arms facility after initial production. These markings connect the rifle not only to FN manufacturing history, but also to its continued service life within Colombia.
For collectors, arsenal marks like this add historical character rather than detract from it.

Latin American Mauser contracts remain one of the most underappreciated areas of Mauser collecting. While German military rifles often dominate collector attention, FN contract rifles — especially those produced for South American nations — offer exceptional craftsmanship, historical relevance, and accessibility.
